VSAM 1 - Introduction to VSAM

VSAM – Virtual Storage Access Method.
In Mainframe Database are divided into two types.

DB2                                                                 FILES

FLAT FILES                                               NON-FLAT FILES
PS                                                                VSAM
                                                                     ESDS
                                                                     KSDS
                                                                     RRDS
                                                                     LDS

• Flat files are mainly used to store data for backup.
• Used to transfer from one PS to another PS.
• VSAM is an independent DB.
• It contains different components like

1.     NAME component
2.      DATA component
3.      INDEX component
